Conventional advice often suggests using a scope ratio of 3:1 in calm conditions, increasing to 5:1 or 7:1 as weather conditions worsen. However, such recommendations do not account for vessel-specific factors, water depth, swell, or wind strength. This raises the question of whether a 7:1 scope suffices in approaching storm conditions or if your current snubber or bridle provides adequate safety.

The Anchor Chain Calculator assesses the minimum necessary length of chain and/or rope based on vessel traits and sea conditions. It calculates the load experienced by the anchor, including how much swell and gusts are absorbed by snubbers, bridles, or ropes—especially critical in shallow water where dynamic and elastic effects play a significant role.

Flexible in its application, the app handles both chain-only scenarios and mixtures of chain and rope, including configurations involving only rope.
