This application offers a more precise approach to anchoring calculations, moving beyond generic guidelines toward a tailored safety solution based on physics. It determines the optimal length of chain or rope required to ensure the best possible grip, considering the specific characteristics of your vessel and environmental conditions.

Developed by an experienced sailor with firsthand anchoring experience, the app emphasizes physics rather than relying solely on traditional rules of thumb. Conventional advice often suggests using a scope ratio of 3:1 in calm conditions, increasing to 5:1 or 7:1 as weather conditions worsen. However, such recommendations do not account for vessel-specific factors, water depth, swell, or wind strength. This raises the question of whether a 7:1 scope suffices in approaching storm conditions or if your current snubber or bridle provides adequate safety.

The Anchor Chain Calculator assesses the minimum necessary length of chain and/or rope based on vessel traits and sea conditions. It calculates the load experienced by the anchor, including how much swell and gusts are absorbed by snubbers, bridles, or ropes—especially critical in shallow water where dynamic and elastic effects play a significant role.

Flexible in its application, the app handles both chain-only scenarios and mixtures of chain and rope, including configurations involving only rope. Users can set limits on chain or rope length to account for obstacles or proximity to other vessels, with insights into how these restrictions influence anchor load and pull angles.

The tool offers two operational modes: Basic Mode for quick use and Expert Mode for those who wish to input detailed vessel data. Units can be selected between metric and imperial according to user preference.

Multiple vessel setups can be saved under different names, facilitating easy switching between various configurations—such as different snubber types for different conditions—while ensuring setup data remains protected from accidental alterations.

Additionally, the app serves as a valuable tool for scenario planning, helping mariners anticipate potential outcomes and improve preparation. It constitutes an insightful complement to anchor alarms and watch systems aimed at enhancing anchoring safety.
